About Us

A scholar of botany and zoology, owner Wendy Bell has a deep love of nature and conservation

Since 2002, after moving from KwaZulu-Natal to the Cape, Wendy has been carefully curating exquisite African art and crafts. Firstly with a presence first at various craft markets, then the Blue Shed, Red Shed and now located in the exceptional Watershed, Wendy’s eye for raw, organic, hand-made and beautifully crafted items has seen numerous customers returning year on year to her store.

Empowering local creativity
Watershed, V & A Waterfront, Cape Town

Exceptional, unique art and décor created by ornithological artist David Cubbin, various botanical artists, as well as female collectives in Zulu-land and the Cape, using traditional materials and methods.

Wendy’s suppliers are all carefully vetted, with relationships developed over years to ensure the utmost quality and authenticity.

Wendy is passionate about empowering women, especially those in impoverished communities, by giving them an opportunity to sell the products they create and thereby generating purpose, pride and an income. The crafts at Maiden Africa are often these women’s only source of income and help to sustain their cultural identity. This is especially true of the grass baskets.
